Yes you do get melee penalty, so you would want no melee penalty. Then I also recommend getting no range penalty.
It has its uses, but early on, not so much. When you can start to afford double shot, shooter, no meele/ranged penalty etc. And you have enough initiative later on, it is probably a better choice.

fight someone with high AP.. you will gain more exp for squashman |
