Here goes an incredible uninteresting tale:

A long time ago - when the merger happened, I got nicked "Lord syrian", because I had a char with the exact same nick in .ru (just "syrian" - now my add).
I really disliked "Lord syrian" because of the "L" beeing capitalised, whereas the "s" was not. But the system wouldn't allow me to change to "Lord Syrian" (said "nick already in use"), or to either "Syrian" or "syrian" - nick already in use, it's my .ru char...
So I thought to change it to something else, given that the admins offered a free change to people in this situation, and afterwards get back to "Lord Syrian", paying the 50 diamonds required. I chose "Syrian Khan" because I was playing Tribal with my .ru add char, and I thought of doing some RP thing between my add and my main (I never did get to that, though).
In the meantime, the admins implemented an automatic nick change system, that doesn't, however, allow players to change nicks more than once. So when I donated 50 diamonds and went oh so happily to the registry, it told me I already had changed my nick once, so no dice. And I got stuck with "Syrian Khan".
I explained this to Arctic, both at the time and in later requests, and hope never quite faded entirely. Some weeks ago he managed to slip the request for a manual nickname change to the admins. I donated 50 diamonds and voila :)
So:
-Never change your nick without thoroughly thinking it through (very important in future mergers)
-Always have at least one Arctic at hand to solve problems (the warmest "Thanks" to you, my Lord Herald)
-And by all means, stop sending mails asking me why I changed my nick! Geezas... |

well, Arctic said the admins implemented the automatic registry thingy to avoid doing it manually themselves. why you can only change nick once I dunno.
having said this, the merger forced people who had chars with same name on both servers to "lose" their nick (at least, those whose main came from .com). for instance: i was quite happy with just "syrian" and i cannot use it in this account. it isn't very fair, but that issue had to be adressed somehow, and offering a free change was quite a nice solution, I reckon. |
