How come the artifacts become colourless? Does this mean that it is no longer usable? |

They can be used. They are arts that were bought before the change in economy:
Prices were (I believe) 65% higher, but when you sell such an art, empire will return 65% of the original price to you.
Now you pay less, but there are no refunds when you discard them. |

not since the merge, since 2013-05-08 07:00:00
and players could then get compensation for those artifacts which turns them into normal ones. But if you didnt do that they are still gray.
Also while they are gray you cant do anything with them (you cant sell them, you cant transfer them, or you cant place them inside an estate etc) |

| It's more than free, you get gold back. It's the same gold you'd get if you sold the art at 0 durability. |
