You need to win battles. Winning battles gives you a chance of earning a trinket. There are 4 trinkets, lantern, star, fir-tree, snowflake.
The chance of earning a trinket in a winning battle is dependent on how many sphynx questions you got right. If you got 9/9 you should always get a trinket in a winning battle.
Once you have the trinket, match them to the symbol on the vault. 4 trinkets are required to open one compartment of the vault.
The middle compartment cannot be opened until all the other compartments have been open.
You might get some trinkets that are useless to you as the trinkets are random. |

It has been like this in previous years. So I imagine it is still the same.
It seems there is a display bug too. Where in MG quests, you may still receive a trinket - But it is not displayed in the winning dialogue at the end of the battle. |

| I think you have to answer sphinx questions before you can get trinkets. also I did not get all nine questions but I have gotten trinket in every battle won so far :) |

there is no such thing as the middle vault is the best. The reason the middle vault can only be opened after all the surrounding vaults have been opened is just to add spice to the excitement of the event
