Wow lot of discussion on bans and stuff.
See the thing is, you have to try to understand where this comes from. Bans and rules are made to make the forums a better place, not worse.
I have seen many cases where something like a long string violation went unpunished, and that should be the case for long strings, or any other minor rule breaks which are not "disturbing" and also not meant to be so.
Now swearing... using the same logic, use of "bad words" as some might put it, should only be punished if they are used to offend someone, or if they just make the text annoying to read for someone who doesn't welcome the abundant use of such bad words. I don't welcome them, for example. However, when it is neither offensive, nor does it make the text difficult to tolerate, then it is just a waste of time going around banning people for the usage of such words(unless your favourite colour is red). These conditions are met in posts 3942 and 4141 for example. Banning 4141 especially is meaningless. The word used is NOT a swear word, but instead a simple noun, a thing. However it can be used as an offensive word depending on context. This clearly did not happen in 4141, so it makes no sense to ban him.
Also, there can be exceptions to this. For example, if it is a very important or formal post in a main forum discussion, perhaps such inoffensive usage of these words should still be punished with a ban. But something like Flooders' Tenthouse? Doing so is just meaningless, and appears like a time pass activity.
If you go over all these Flood topics, and the tens of thousands of posts, you are bound to find hundreds in which small deviations from rules were made and were left unpunished, justly.
Also it takes some wisdom to realize equality is not equity. Being equal to everyone, regardless of the "behind the scenes" is just as bad as being heavily biased and impartial. Equity is often not considered in the making of rules, as such considerations just make the implementation and execution of such rules considerably more difficult, so for the sake of simplicity these rules and up being heavily impartial in many cases. The ban of 4141 was an example of this. A forum ban is an extremely insignificant matter in the large scale of problems society faces, however such blind implementation of equal and inequitable rules is one of the many causes of the society being an unfair place as we simply take it to be for granted nowadays. This can however, be avoided if those with power just try to understand why they are doing something, instead of just doing something solely for the sake of doing it.
