Yes it as winnable - the variable is how much arts you put on. With the arts you were wearing, no it was not.
If you do min ap thieving one concedes automatically a stat gap between you and the AI that makes it harder. Your opposition had more than 10 more attack and 10 more defence due to arts.
In PVP one would expect to lose every battle with that stat difference, however we still expect to win consistently due to superior playing compared to AI and the dynamic balancing. Win all, no. Some we will win much less often than others, might DE is a good example of this.
I am not sure how it will work on your level, but I like the tactics talent when thieving. it means I can bunch my troops together such that I can gang up on any stack, meanwhile most of the time some of my opponents get isolated at another corner. In this example it would mean that only one corner was occupied, so a 1 in 4 chance that the shrews would not hit anything. Often the AI will advance fairly crudely to you to allow a good counter attack. |

I don't think tactics will really work for elf, I just take all might talents |
it is winnable, depend on your ap and skill.
when you have less initiative than opponent (min ap), hide in corner is waiting for death. you should put efk and sprites at the same side of shooters, hope your shooters attract the first turn attack of shrews (old ai will 100% do this but new ai not 100%), then hit them hard by efk and sprites. |

If You have higher ini then with first hit u can hit them hard.
Anyway i would say as elf place whole army on one side (i.e. bottom and left) attract with shooters their first hit and try to take them out (EFK and Uni may have one hit at start)
vs might DE hiding is bad tactics (they have tons of archers), against shrews / rogues if u cannot reach them u cannot kill them with their move 7-8 they will avoid You...
But as others wrote might DE is a very hard opponent |
In TG, the essential parameter is initiative. That's why might DE and Elf caravans are so deadly.
Also, your shooters will be weak against big numbers; they are bait, most of the times they won't last more than 2 turns intact.
On the other hand, melee stacks are stronger and bulkier. And given the TG map design, you can get all of them to sit in range for a 1st turn attack.
The key artifacts for TG are those which give "In the beginning of the battle the hero's army shifts X% forward on the ATB-scale" (Temporal signet-ring, Sandglass). Use them if you can afford them. |
