No, they don't have to be same.
Actually, in practice i've practically carried all the battles to victory just by myself :|
Its a fairly balanced team with 1 melee and 2 archers and one hybrid archer that stays back to protect the other archers.
The teammate could use the same build or go for something a little different.
I've seen one teammate of mine use large numbers of imps. That was very helpful against caster type enemies.
Can you guys share your armies? Or battles

Thunder rumbles. Flashes of lightning slice through the rapidly blackening sky. Has Abu-Bakir once again discovered a temporary rift in the fabric of time? So it became known. And so the stronger and more stable the magic of the portal, the more furiously nature sought to resist this phenomenon. However, the court wizard himself did not seem to notice this at all. Or did he just choose not to notice, to ignore the signs? In the end, he believed that prohibiting even the world's strongest forces is not the exclusive right of Nature alone, but also the limits of the scientific reason. But even Abu-Bakir himself could not understand why the overwhelming majority of mortals were so completely willing to trust the wizard's wisdom and so ready to follow his ambitions to travel through time.

Lords and Ladies, the Portal of Time is once again opened and is ready to invite into his mysterious embrace, all people who are greedy for new discoveries. Everyone of combat level 5 and above can join the scientific expedition to the Past, to protect it from the aggression of its local inhabitants. The main thing - remember that travel to the past can have irreparable consequences in the future, so try not to make any mistakes!

Features of the Portal of Time:
1) Heroes of combat level 5 or above are allowed to participate. Only shop artifacts are allowed; enchantments have no effect;
2) Character talents, faction skills and unique racial abilities have no effect, and also you can't take your army into the battle and use spells;
3) In combat, you’ll recruit a new set of creatures, just for the Portal of Time. A minimum of 250 crystals is required for access to the portal and will be issued to everyone wishing to attend;
4) Creatures in the army can be combined in any way and they can belong to one or more factions. Their availability is defined by having enough crystals of time to recruit them;
5) When recruiting creatures of different factions, morale is decreased. However, paying for the "Hall of Unity" prevents any decrease in morale when using multi-faction armies;
6) To unlock magical spells, you need to have an appropriate amount of crystals. When you unlock a group of spells, all spells of all schools are opened to the maximum level purchased.

Combat briefing and mission of the expedition:
1) The battles with the defenders of the past will take place in the format 2 vs 2;
2) For every victory you can earn; creature armaments, mercenary elements, artifacts with reduced durability and a quantity of Crystals of Time;
3) The number of Crystals gained depends on battle difficulty. Initially 5 difficulty levels are available, from 1 to 5 - and you can start from any one. When you pass level 5, five additional levels become available, from 1 to 10. When you pass level 10, you will move on to levels 5 through 15, etc.;
4) During the Portal of Time journeys, you can win no more than 3 battles at each level;
5)The advantageous location of the stars in the sky suggest the Portal will last only 8 days until 20 April inclusive (+2 days for the end of fighting, until 22 April inclusive);
6) Abu-Bakir guarantees safe return from the Past for all lords and ladies, but limits the number of time travels to 12 per day. Unused travels accumulate (the maximum number of battles is 96);
7) The Empire will generously reward the lords and ladies who have collected the greatest number of crystals.

And in order to emphasize the special importance of this expedition, the personal successes of each lord or lady will further be encouraged by the rewarding of parts of a special artifact:

For victory on the 30th level of difficulty: +4 parts;
For victory on the 40th level of difficulty: +5 parts;

From what I see the portal is very easy for lower levels and they can advance easily to the high levels. It's the parameters that does it, the lower the level the less parameters AI has, the higher the level the more parameters it has which makes that exact same AI unit stack size suddenly a onehitter allkiller. Admins should really start taking this under consideration and change recruitment sizes according to ones level. At combat level 5 even over a 100 bandits becomes practicly unkillable by the AI level 5, but at high level it crumples away like dust. The higher the level the more parameters AI is getting. No wonder low combat level always are in top 10 of these portal events.

Why is it necessary to challenge higher levels???? Don't you get the same no. Of CoT at each level????
Higher levels are only for armour or there are any other reasons?????

you get more cot for higher level of portal, and more cot means more money and higher durability of artifact reward.

Lawton is right. At least from what i've seen.
Lower levels have an apparent advantage here because the lord's skills/talents do not work, and just the artifacts stats effect anything,

That is only half true, low CLs do have an advantage, but only at early stages of the event(when we have less CoT) but at later stages high CLs really get going with tiers 6&7, also they really have an advantage of having more parameters, which makes builds like mass decay or chaos caster possible.
What troops have u guys gone with 600+ crystals?
tier 2 troops or more than that?
Barb army has worked well for me
80 boars, 90 Raiders, 30+ Orc Tyrants, 30+ Orc chiefs, 6-9 Orc Shamans, 4 Gob Warlocks

not only talents, but also faction skill level which is fixed to zero of yourself, but enemy has fsl bonus which is very significant at high level.

Griffins 40/Royal Griffins 25/Wild griffins 25
But I feel Griffin's won't survive after lvl 15. They can easily be killed by shooters and I haven't won a game with my teammate having this setup.
