Author17th paired tournament plus
The problem with dwarves are their shooters. The melee can be blocked; they won't come to near unless they can finish you off, because they are easily killed. Unfortunately, they don't need to. They can stay back, and let shooters do their job. Unless you can debuff or take out shooters, life becomes difficult.
for Flying_Penguin:
Classic demon, tamer and BW in that order, anything else is weaker than shadow.

Melee can't always be blocked and that's the problem to me: the 2 berserks can kill up to 2 small stacks, and only disproportionally big stack could prevent them to kill in 1 hit. Even if I can pull that off they put the bears right next to the invokers in setup, and this means there's a 50% chance that the bear moves before the invoker (they have same ini), if they do then they can reach 3 out of the 4 tiles that I can use to block the thanes from using retribution. However that 4th tile that can not be reached by bears still allows thanes to use divinity rune and hit 3 "meaningful" stacks with a powerful hit. The rune also increase their defense massively which makes them virtually invulnerable until their next turn turn, so even if I pull that off I still end up hit twice by invokers before they can be killed, so in practice it is even more devastating than retribution where it would get two hits but one that does not get powered by +15 attack.

So in practice it is almost impossible to effectively protect one way or another (only possible if the berserk don't kill the blocking stack and bears move after invokers) besides gambling on how smart the dwarf is.
Umm. based on that link isnt' shadow barb completely op? I mean I get it's a small sample size but still... and huh, classic elf seems to do very poorly and Charmer pretty well. Which is the opposite of what I'm experiencing. How trustable is that chart? Fury barb seems to have a bad time...

Let me combine this with the discussion on dwarves. It doesn't seem to have that good of a overall winrate, but I still keep hearing people complaining about it, what gives? (not disagreeing, I think every faction is OP but the one I'm playing ;) )
It is the result of last MT for your level, at say level 15 or 16 dwarf is more successful (#1 or #2 after shadow), invokers and dragons make for a nice buff but yes shadow barb stands out on most levels as the ultimate OPed faction. It's just less common than dwarves.
for Slust: As a BW I have decreased my recruit count of battle magi from 19 to 12 to gain around 30 grotesques. This gives one stack that cannot be removed easily and another stack that in certain circumstances can do some damage. Sometimes its a bit of a waste if I use them as retal takers, though usually the tactical flexibility they provide is worth it in my opinion.
I've had garg with previous builds but I would expect that bears would still kill them in 1 hit so 50% of the time I would just be feeding the bears a big stack at the cost of 7 magis. Then in other instances they die from retal, do mild damage, I only find them useful to sneak in and block shooters 1 or 2 turns.

Battlemagi aren't central to my strategy but there are more and more classic elves with tactics and extra range is welcome to handle that (if just to die instead of gremlins).

Especially now that dwarves go full out attack, they are easy to shoot and since they end up berserking the spears it doesn't harm to shoot them up, that can save from double hit and mayhem on genies.
17 lvl 11f dwarf or 10f barb
@Ursa, that depends, if you want to have fast games dwarf, shadow barb takes a long time even like an hour to play.
for Ursa:

I think dwarf :D
Paired teams are pretty strange. There's a good deal of classic elves and DE when I thought they were an extinct breed and at the other end of the spectrum there seem to be a good deal of teams of two dark barbs, you need a really strong team to be able to cope with these two extremes.
I faced dark demon and dark barb, seduction with blind and vermins to syphon even more to cyclops is brutal.

OMG what a deadly combo *.*
No extension,thank God!
Results and rewards are in.

As expected the number completing the paired tournament is way way down, and those getting 90% win rate is almost non existent. However, they have done the sensible thing and scaled the top results such that some people actually get golds and silvers.
Dominance of dwarves clearly evident in the random allocation (most flexible pvp faction by far). This is particularly evident from FL17 upwards. This dominance is less so with the preset teams, which is good as it implies that other mixes have a shot, though seemingly often only with the correct partner, whereas dwarves can work with any build really.
As for my level shadow barbarians were the ones totally dominating the battle field , i dont even remember coming across a lot of Dwarfs or Tribals , weird to see there were so few of them while a few months ago there were so many of them.

The real problem here is to find a teammate that accepts to make 20 wins even if you don't get gold. First teammate I found which was a lot in PvP so I thought would have the patience to make it through just quit after our first battle/loss (OK I got decimated by luck + favoured ennemy on 1st move on my genies, but anything would get destroyed by that right?). Then there are so few teams that I had no opponent quite a few times, I gave up when I knew I couldn't get the wins in time.

That added with the fact that there is hardly any incentive to do that if you already did it for random: you can't get more artifact parts and you don't get more potions. I understand for armor parts to not force people to do the tournament twice but a freebie like extra potions would have been nice.
