How is the pirate compass supposed to give you defense?
I understand knowledge. I understand init/speed.
But defense???... |

Maybe when someone tries to kill you with sword,it takes the hit....
Often happens in movies. |
It may provide magnetic field around you due to which when the enemy tries to hit , the magnetic field supports you :P:P |
Compass that produces a magnetic field would be a pretty useless one :P
it's a good question though, the compass gives as much def as a steel buckler, which is quite a lot |
It's a big compass you carry on your back.. works like a shield. |

XD
In the image it looks quite big and good enough to provide protection.
(Expecting more self-satisfactory explanations X_X) |

Makes sense when the enemy will try to hit , the hero carrying it on his back can turn 180* and hence repel the attack :D |

I hate to point this out to you, but a compass that does not produce a magnetic field would not work, it the repulsion of this smaller magnet, in line with the Earths magnetic field that allows it to work. Granted it is a very small magnetic field, though not zero.
I think it works by this magnetic field attracting to nearby metal objects, thus alerting you to the attack of the enemy and allowing you to better defend the incoming blow.
To be fair though, you wear all this stuff and do not fight at all yourself. How does you having a shield help some ghosts not get shot, its not like they can hold it! |

Amazing!!! Expecting more innovative, ingenious theories and postulates =D |

Think that it will also give you attack if you wear enough other pirate stuff. Perhaps it's the piratey look that freaks out the ennemy, so you fight better? |
for Lord MilesTeg: I would have to correct you there, as a magnetic compass on a ship with a metal hull wouldn't work properly. Metal = influencing magnetic fields = possible disaster.
That is why they invented the gyrocompass.
Older ship's compasses can easily be 15-30 cm in diameter or more: ever tried reading a pocketsize compass in the dark on a with a candle ;) |

Good point! But i was of course referring to the casing of the compass not the needle :) |
Any doubts regarding pirates, consider this expert's advice

Quality equipment is of upmost importance to ensure survival of the wearer, thus this is a very important topic as we must understand what we are wearing to be sure that it is what we need. If a mod reads this, please consider pinning this! |

Sadly, we do not have that power =P |
Looks cool so enemy decides to become friends instead of attack :P |
The compass helps the warrior to visualize the orientation of Earth's magnetic field. As the warrior maneuvers, the small magnet in the compass experiences acceleration. The rate of change of flux passing through the accelerating compass produces a voltage. This voltage induces an electric current in the armor. However, e.m.f. is usually too small and since in most armors, metallic volumes are dispersed throughout while also being not aligned in a particular direction, the electron movement is not able to change properties of the armor significantly. Burst electron movements do produce electromagnetic waves but the intensity is still negligible.
However, the genius of the pirates was that they were able to manufacture a compass housing a system of magnets, not just a single bipolar magnet. The magnetic field is still small but from my initial investigations, it seems to be constructed such that the field is concentrated on the chest region if you orient the compass correctly in the backpack. If the warrior is skilled enough to use the orientation knowledge and maneuver well, he can cause strong enough streams of current to move the free electrons towards the flanks or the front forward facing section of the armor. Luckily, most armors of the empire are made from substances which even when non-metallic, behave like a semiconductor when sufficient voltage is applied. As the free electrons, fill the holes, those regions of the armor increase in tensile strength. Of course, as you can already guess, this increase in defense is induced and semi-permanent.
Of course, it would take skilled and literate warriors to be able to make use of these properties. European Foreign Legion has invited a team of scientists from Novagolabore to study this further. If they make further discoveries that pass through the peer review process at our academies in Shining Spring and Empire Capital, I will be sure to post here. |
