U need the TG for later levels. Else you fall behind on initiative.
I have TG, I don't play it anymore but if u get to TG 6 u get thief invitation which u cn sell for 500k so u get ur gold back.

For me, I hate TG. Its stupid since u have to lose battles intentionally to reduce difficulty.
But, it gives a little gold and its necessary for a healthy character so no choice
