and whats the difference between attack and damage? and how is defense useful at all?
Damage is a random factor for how hard each unit hits. Attack is a fixed modifier to this.

Defense obviously makes you harder to kill; it's not very useful in several battle types (hunts,...) because your troops will die more or less in one hit no matter what but in PvP, its usefulness depends on your tactic. A faction with a lot of shooter will want to max out attack, to kill before the ennemy comes in melee range. A faction with weak range should rely more on defense, to survive shooters and be able to kill melee units. Or survive longer to cast holy or dark spells (but those are only unlocked at level 5). Or for tribals because they need to survive long enough to farm tribal spirit,...

In the other hand high defense means you will kill the ennemy slowly thus making you weaker to pretty much any magic school.

In theory, magic DE should focus on SP and KN although defense means surviving longer and so more usefull than attack. In practice, at your level, the difference beetween might and magic is just a few parameter points and so you only hit slightly more weakly than might and so magic DE plays more like an hybrid of might and magic than what a magic DE looks like after several level up.

And about the defense thing. I understand it for troops(units). But for my character who cant be hit, it confuses me. Sorry if i sound silly, but it doesnt make any sense to me!

Your character stats are added to those of your units. Both attack and defense add a little bit to your character damage but the impact is very small compared to the increase of stats for your units.

Have lost three times already

since minos are only for defense.
for The One Ring:

Not easy, and it has been a while since I was level 10 to have a good feel for damage done etc, however things I would consider

Hydras are too slow and don;t hit hard enough - sacrifice there position and put them to the back - while wasting them it does mean you can hit with minos and stalkers first time. I am presuming that you have positioned it this way however to protect from hitting anything important since they move first - I do not know how much damage they do and whether this is something you have to accept to get into things. If it is then maybe a defensive build would be best to be able to grind him down.

Consider summoning venomous spiders instead - the take a retal which can be useful for your minos and enmesh can help you control movement of creatures- eg you take retal on crusaders with a stalker - then hit with spiders, allowing the rest of your army to attack the rest of his troops, leaving his crusaders to have to focus on the spiders which you can resummon straight after.

Consider offence talents and tactics if you want to make sure you hit first with your troops (could be used to block xbows as well) a termangant or rogue could be used for this.

Could you have hit his griffs with the lizards without his crusaders then reaching you?

I would be inclined to use invisibility on your first turn (or else hit first and combo with a lizard charge depending on what you can hit.

Tough though I would expect

These crusaders have 5 speed (lol how??), so no. Can't hit with liz.
They have too much meat. Even if i were to get to get first hits as desired, my chances would still be slim.
These are a different type of crusaders (not the holy knight ones), as you can see it also has undead bane and double strike instead of crusade ability. Funny that they share the same name though.

Why does the foul Hydra deal damage against an attacking Opponent? is zhis an abillity that is not mentioned in the creature`s describtion?

why am i not allowed to ambush when i dont recruit drakes.

But if i leave Hydras at home, i have sufficient troops?

I thought that depends on total HP.

But obviously 8 Hydrad have more HP than drakes...

I am confused.
I think its due to total Hp & types of creature of your army.as u select hydra u get less stalker thus not taking drakes make total hp & types of creature less then required by system.
