It's a restriction placed by the game. From Level 5 onwards, you HAVE to have a minimum of 5 points of AP in order to battle. I think it's to stimulate the economy...

| For level 5, if you have enough golds, you can try sword of retribution, it is 5ap. |

Steel blade costs 22 gold/battle, and axe - 12 gold.
the difference is 1 defence point, so better is a relative term. |
