The warning message is
"You may not engage in combat without a weapon in your right hand"
Once I equiped a weapon, it says, I need 5 AP. What does that mean? I can't join any battle without arts from lvl5 and up?

| AP means ammunition points, they are displayed for example in the shop. The cheapest way to get 5 AP is a light axe and a defender shield. |

If you travel without artifacts, a thief can still catch you

thats correct, being ambushed is for level 6 and higher.
But there are certain mercernary quests where you have to escort a caravan and you get attacked by the computer(Brigands) and that is possible at level 5 |

| The only exceptions to the min AP rule for you right now is being ambushed by Dragons or by the brigands in merc quests. |
