The lack of law and order...

AuthorThe lack of law and order...
I just made a post touching on this in another thread, but thought that perhaps it merits discussion as a topic all it's own. Before I even start, this is not a thread to flame mods, admins, or anyone else. It is instead a topic to discuss, in a civil manner, the current state of lawlessness.

I was prompted to write this after browsing through the Finance section and the GGF. I noticed in my browsing that there have been several topics recently dealing with a player named FluffySheep. This player has multiple complaints lodged against him for running phishing scams to get passwords. A quick look at his transfer log shows he has been fairly successful in this endeavor. A further bit of research into his clan (#600) shows it to be populated with quite a few similar lowlifes. Perhaps it's a training ground for wannabe scammers. Anyway, this is just background and the prompt for this topic, not the actual subject of the topic.

I have been playing here for approaching a year now and things seem to have taken a rather dramatic turn for the worse recently. In the past several weeks it seems that the number of scammers, cheaters, etc has been rising unchecked. I'm aware of the constraints on the Jurists, Mods, Keepers, etc and know that this is beyond their current ability to control, but that doesn't change the fact that SOMETHING needs to be done. The current state of lawlessness can only hurt the community and the game as it slowly creates a sense of disillusionment in honest players and ultimately chases them from the game. In my opinion, this is the single largest danger, resulting from the lack of admin presence, to the .com community.

The lack of promised changes and updates is annoying, but many who enjoy the game will stick around and hope things eventually improve. However we seem to be reaching a state where the inmates are in charge of the asylum and that could chase good, honest players away in droves.

While this occurs, we see the mods continue to enforce the forum rules, which is good ultimately. But at the same time, it does give a bit of an impression of "fiddling while Rome burns". If we are punishing minor forum infractions, yet letting blatant, outright cheating and scamming occur, what type of community are we? This is NOT a slam on mods at all, it is merely to illustrate the point that as a community, all sense of priority and rationality seem to be dissolving.

Thoughts?
Well, it's "funny" to see that cheating cases reported are still unprocessed since February 2009 (with small breaks when admins or Arctic pass by and block some). That's more than a year and 90 pages = 2700 posts on CaA forum!!!

Mods are active so they do their job. Admins are inactive so cheaters (among other things) pile up.

Thoughts?
Check the other thread talking about the dead server.
Agreed on the mods. I do not fault them at all for doing their jobs. Somehow it just seems so trivial though in the face of the larger issues at play. I also do not fault the jurists, as it seems their hands are tied as well.

It just increasingly seems that the fate of this server is not so bright.
It is only fair to note that none of this truly harms skilled players. Skill in combat and other things comes from long hard work and study. Scamming requires neither of these, and so does not benefit players to the same degree.

With regard to the phishing comments, if players are stupid enough to hand out their password, then to a great degree, it is the fault of the player himself. The phisher is guilty and should be blocked, but he can only harm those foolish enough to ignore the many warnings already on this forum and built into this game, such as the one that appears on the PM screen. Also, a basic level of common sense will shield players against this form of attack.

Do not misunderstand me - I would love to see cheaters get blocked by the hundreds and penalized according to their follies. However, they cannot kill the server for me, nor can they prevent me from enjoying this game with my clanmates and the members of other military clans totally committed to the prevention of cheating within their ranks.
Cheaters ruin everygame...without fair play, it is no longer a good game.

Lot of cheaters gaining unfair advantages (especially at lower levels) win a large chunk of tournament gold, gbs, etc...because their illegal monies grants them all sorts of unearned privilages.

The admins have to give the Jury members the POWER to do their JOB. They haven't done that. So nothing will change on that front.
for Slynky:
I agree with you buddy. The future of this server does not seem very bright at all. Did you read Sven's conversations with Arctic on this server? He posted them on the Warriors' Guild forum:
http://www.warriors-guild.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1040

The admins look like they want no part of this server. They stonewall Arctic when he asks them for stuff for us like the Dwarf War. When he asked them when it would be ready, they told him "when we have time." They essentially told him to get lost.

This is what Kotrin said after he read those battle chats:
Telling, and not in a good way.
You said this:
That's one of the single most demoralizing threads I have ever read.

I agree with you guys. Maxim and Alexander only care about .ru
It's almost like we don't exist. I have a bad feeling about this server. Arctic told Sven that we would hear from him soon.

It's been about a month since these conversations took place and nothing has happened.

I beg to differ... cheaters may not be able to DIRECTLY prevent you from enjoying the game, but they can indirectly do so. For the dedicated players who invest a tremendous amount of time developing hard learned skills, the cheaters probably have little direct impact. However, I suspect that these players make up only a small percentage of overall players. Casual players, on the other hand, who may already be discouraged at a lack of upgrades, could easily become disillusioned with the game and community as cheating grows ever more rampant. Eventually, it's quite possible that they reach the point of frustration where they move on and find another game to spend time on.

If enough players leave, the economics of keeping the server up and running will simply not make sense and could absolutely result in the demise of the server. Can you imagine Alexander or Maxim paying the bandwidth and hosting fees for a server that only has maybe 100 or so players? Perhaps they would, but it seems unlikely to me.

This is really the point of my post. I agree that players who are scammed or cheated have no one to blame but themselves, however their seems to be a larger systemic issue with the skyrocketting amount of cheating. It is this systemic rise of lawlessness that I feel could put us all on the path to having to find another game to play.
Javi - It was that thread over on the WG site that started my thinking down this path. It has knawed at the back of my mind since I read it. It certainly doesn't seem to bode well for the future of this server. Arctic has been online several times since that conversation, yet we have no news. I suspect in this case that no news is bad news.
yeh it seems like the admin runs this site as a part time hobby, but a site of this size should be run full time. or someone should be employed to do so.
i agree with Slynky
This server is abandoned by admins for a very long time (for more than 1 year), but this server isn't dead and actually active enough.

Believe me, it is not easy to create a game, where always would be 500-1000 players online, because there are so many very good online games that I'm surprised that this game still have so much players.

It means that this game is a really good game.

If admins don't have time for this game then it is understandable.
But if it were my game, I would really make it very profitable, because I see very good potential for this game.
And it would be much more players in .com servers than on .ru servers (obviously, because of English language).

Simple note:
nobody knows this game outside Russia, except some few HoMM fans.
for Robai:
I am a computer science major in a US university and I understand how hard it is to program anything in php let alone a game of this size.

But I wouldn't be confident of this server's survival. I have just received some troubling information about this server that my clan's leadership has asked me not to divulge the details of but the gist of it is: We're in trouble. The admins are dealing with some complicated off-game issues that could either have serious implications for this server or go away quietly.

All we can do is enjoy this game the way it is now and pray that the issues the admins are facing get resolved and we can receive updates in the future.

Hmm i guess you are referring to the rumours about ubisoft... not good
That is still no excuse for letting cheaters run wild all over this server! Arctic, I know that your hands are tied with regards to saying anything about the server's future but can you at least put your sheriff's uniform on and crack down on some of these phishing scams and other blatant cheaters?
Otherwise, people might start to think that they can get away with whatever they want and lead this server into chaos.

It's like baseball. The people who took steroids hit more home runs and made more money than the honest players. Over time, more and more players started taking steroids because there was no testing for it and they could get away with it. Now Major League Baseball has random drug tests. Players who test positive get suspended 50 games for the first offense, which is approximately one third of the season. If they get caught again, the ban is 100 games. The third time is a lifetime ban if I am not mistaken.

Since this testing went into effect, home run numbers went down across the league. Coincidence, I don't think so!

Bottom line is: cheaters must be caught and punished. Admins, please give the jurists the power to do their JOBS. Arctic cannot do it all by himself.
As one of the juries we are also demoralised by the lack of actions on cheats.

Despite a good initial batch of actions (fines/blocks), we have effectively been on hold since November with no action being taken against any cheats we have identified.

The admins are unwilling to give powers to block (or even fine) players to anyone except Arctic and I agree with a number of the posts above that more power needs to be given to trusted people to help deal with this problem. We have a number of people on this server who are willing, able and committed to tackling this problem in a fair and inbiased manner.

If the admins are not willing to do anything themselves then they need to let those of us who are sort things out.

99% of the cheats are very obvious and have rings of characters (often in large numbers) which could quickly and easily be dealt with by the juries (current and future).

All we ask is to be given the chance.
I just read the WG forum info given in post 6...

... if you havent already... read it... ... ...
Actually, you probably shouldn't read it unless you're prepared to be deeply depressed :-(
I want to see Justice!!!!!!!
just read the post very sad Eleven Lord in post 13 you mentioned the Ubisoft rumors? just curious what those are? i have not heard them.

I also agree there is a lot of obvious cheating and the baseball analogy was the best way to describe it
a while back this game used to be called heroes of war and money but it was changed apparently because it was too related to heroes of might and magic. i'm guessing there are still too many similarities and ubisoft gonna do something about it :/
This topic is long since last update and considered obsolete for further discussions.
