A few times we saw some people posting events from their reallife in the forum (e.g. going on a holliday). the reactions to it were completely different: from participation to mockery, from interest to disapproval.
(i don't want to talk about this reactions. Everyone has his/ her way).
I want to start such a thread myself, because i will go on a long holliday. but i don't want to start a controversy or a flamewar.
my question: should i just write in my personal settings? or do you think it's ok to start such a thread?

Go ahead and create the thread. As with any off-game forum topic, there will be people who do not like what you post, yet there still remains people who do. Even if it's only 1 or 2 interested people, go ahead! | Announcing one's holidays in a forum thread might be perceived as a self-aggrandizing move (especially if the holidays in question are "special"). In all cases, it can be seen as an irritating display of self-centredness. After all, plenty of people go on vacation all the time, and (thanks God!) not all of them feel the urge to post about it in game forums.
If you indulge in such a statement, brace yourself for serious irony in comments. You announce some offline time, you can always use personal info on your character page. People interested in joining you will have a look, others don't bother.
As for returning from holidays, you can probably create a thread in off-topic forum, but only if you have something useful to tell in it (like, advertising for a great picture gallery you just added, or telling hilarious anecdotes).
This post only reflects my views and my perception of netiquette, of course. | | It depends on the vacation/trip to a large degree... if you are going on an expedition to climb Mt Everest, that's fascinating and please share it. Likewise, if you're going on a polar expedition, sailing round the world, travelling to the international space station, or other rare type of adventure that few will ever experience, please share it with us. However, if you're going to Disney World like millions of others do every year, perhaps an entry in your personal settings might be better received. In the end, do what feels comfortable to you... if you want to post, then post. if you want to keep in in your personal settings, do that... the most important thing is that you enjoy your holiday. | I don't care. If you feel it's important to let the whole server know, write it. Offtopic forum is full of useless topics, so one more won't hurt anyone.
On the other side for me it would be enough to write it in personal information. The players who wonder where I am, will have a look at it. |
