Possibility 1. If by escape routes you mean Exits , he could have walked out of an entry gate
Possibility 2. military ordered a lockdown causing all escape routes to be closed down To hear the alarm, order a lock out and the locking of gates (physically) will take some time. If the person broke in near a escape route, he could escape using that before the actual locking takes place.
Possibility 3. As you said, he broke in ( lets say by climbing over a wall) he could break out the same way he came in ( by climbing over the wall again),
Possibility 4. man managed to escape unharmed and without a single scratch. even if the man was caught, he could bribe/lie his way out. then he would have escaped unharmed and without a single scratch. |

Unfortunately, the emergency escape is at least 3 kilometers away from where the man is standing NOW.
However due to a certain reason, the man managed to escape unharmed and without a single scratch.
The escape was somewhat near him and when the alarm was set off, he went through it. When you wrote this, he was already far from prison that is 3 km from the exit :P |

He activated a nearby Fire Alarm and exited the base by the emergency exit, just like everyone else.
The darkness and confusion should easily help cover him until he manages to exit unharmed.
