Hybrid is a mixture of both might and magic - So putting about half your points towards knowledge/spell power and the other half towards attack. As he is a lower level, he does not need to be concerned with a hybrid build as he has limited access to magic for now. At later levels, perhaps level 10+ I would suggest that he explore some hybrid builds if he wishes to.
But for now, at level 2 I would put a point on knowledge. If you are not happy with where you distribute your stats, you can always reset them with a potion of oblivion at a later date.
