They were earned in battles in the dragon cave event which was at the end of 2008. You registered in March of 2009, so that was after the event.
The resources were given to those who won against the dragons and were sold were used to build the lighthouse and the pier in Misty Coast. Some people did not sell theirs to the facility at the time, so still have theirs.
