Author[Event] Alec's Challenge - All questions in this thread.
What faction of following is good for unholy necro: Dwarf, DE, ELF, Tribal?
I can't beat him as charmer elf. Already lost 5 times :(
I believe tribal with some defensive build.
Finally I beat him (unholy necro). The key to success was easy.
Regular elf with max luck -.-
Shadow barb left.
Can anyone suggest why my Battlemagi dealt no damage, on several occasions, in an Alec's Challenge battle?

I can only imagine that there is some sort of bug with careful aim, that if a target of careful aim has careful aim itself the adjacent squares to such a target are protected from through shot.

We can not review other players battles. If the enemy was a Battlewise wizard, then any troops you tried to hit that were adjacent to an enemy battlemagi will not receive damage. That is no bug I think, since the enemy creature will be protected by their battlemagi from through shot as they are adjacent to them. The description says that allied troops next to a battlemagi will not take damage from through shot.

Basically I believe any creature adjacent to a battle magi on field will not take damage from through shot .
The ability name "Careful Aim" kind of implies that it's more the unit making the shot that should not be damaging allied units.

It doesn't really make sense that Careful Aim would reduce damage from enemy shots.

I can't imagine that this is how the ability was intended to work.

I can understand why you would think based on the name that it should still damage enemy troops - That makes sense to me to. But the ability itself, if we boil it down, just makes creatures resistant to through shot if they are adjacent to a creature with the ability. You can't really name it, immunity to through shot - Because it does not apply to the creature itself, but to the adjacent creature, so I guess they decided to call it Careful Aim.
I agree that the ability works as it is worded. I just think that it is Not Working As Intended.

I'll guess I need to report it in the Combat problems thread.

Decided to research it a bit more and it looks like it is working as intended :) There are many problem reports on the .RU forum - But all the responses say that it is working as it should and the admin have not indicated they will change it.

In the original HOMM V, this ability was in two parts,
One was Through Shot which is the same as the one Lorekeepers and Magi habe and the other was Dampen Magic and I quote,' This creature completely defends all neighbouring friendly stacks from distant Mage attacks.'

Even there the ability part did not explicitly state that adjacent allied stacks would take no damage from the Battlemagi's through shot. You had to read the unit information to get that.

Its not a combat problem at all. Just an error in nomenclature.
And this is LWM, not HoMM V.

Well it looks like the translation of the ability name from .ru is something like "mute magic" which is much closer to Santremus' "Dampen Magic".

Getting to "Careful Aim" from "Mute Magic" must have been a fairly interesting translation process ...

It's also a little strange that the Battlemagi can protect adjacent allies, but not themselves.

*Sigh*

At least I know now for future battles.

Lodestone Golem's Magnetism works in the same way like an aura. Except their Lode-Coated also protects them from the redirected Chaos Magic spell damage
