How to play card game?

AuthorHow to play card game?
Guys,

first of all, you can't compare the cost of gold cards to arts renting or enrolling.

When you rent an art, it will almost never pay back. You'll win, yes, but the gold will be ridiculous.

When you enroll, you can only do so once per hour.

From my own experience, gold cards are a good help (very good one); but you can still win without (sometimes i like to play without gold cards just for the fun of the extra challenge); and you can win the cost back with just one game starting from lvl 5 (which is before you reach that lvl 8).
Also, you can play several games in one hour, i already had boring days when i did some 30+games. Dépends really how dedicated you are.

Now, on the game itself: Yes, don't be mistaken, luck does play a role. Yesterday I played a game against an average guy, but in the 50+ turns we did, i only saw a +3 tower blue card. Had only greens, no walls, and barracks at 2. Of course he destroyed me.

But what matters isn't that 70%, or 80% or 90% luck: the real matter is how you use the remaining 10 to 30%, that's where the difference lies.

I personally found (sorry Slust) that the higher the requirements to finish a game are, the less luck will impede you to win. That's why i often (almost always) play on east river's rules: it leaves a chance to create a strategy.
And if you look at the tavern you'll see that other do like me, one of the best two-towers players (RIN) is always playing with the same rules.

EC rules are probably the second most luck-based ones, because you only need a few cards to win or kill the opponent, due to low requirements and initial levels. Starting 1st in those places is already a huge advantage by itself.

The 1st place in the luck scale coming in pair to those places where you either start with 1-1-5 or where you are at 50/50 tower/wall with plenty of ressources from start.

Let's talk about golden cards: why are they important? Of course, first of all, you get an extra card at the beginning. But if you think about it, if it was just that you would be as well served by one of the several "play again" cards in the deck, wouldn't you?

No, the real advantage of the 7th card is that you handle an extra spot to KEEP cards during the game. The more cards you can have in hand, the higher your chances at controlling some part of the game.

The most common example: when you want to blast your opponent's mine, the strategy is generally to keep as many mine cards in your hand to avoid him to reconstruct.
Now, the game has
+1,
+2,
+1/2,
+1each,
+1+4wall,
equal highest;
that's already 6 cards.

And if you get to block them all, how do you play after that? :)

The 7th card comes in as a 7 spot where you can play any other card, without freeing those key 6 ones, so that your opponent's mine can only go down, and never up. Don't Under-estimate it, it's a huge advantage!

There are a lot of other things to say, but i don't think it helps knowing them if you don't learn them during a game. So my suggestion remain, try to match the highest players, they will not always play for gold, sometime you'll see a lvl 15 putting up a challenge for nothing. Just pop in and try your best, see how he plays, try to defend against him.
You may win or loose, doesn't matter, what matter is to see how he plays the cards in his hand (that you don't know in advance ;) )
And don't fix yourself on GC, try all different areas, until you find the one where you feel more at ease. It was east river for me, may be any other for you - just play them all as long as it's free.

Final thing, also remember that the gambler's guild level doesn't give any advantage in a card game, it only show how much experience the other has.

Yep, it's mostly luck. But luck is evenly deployed in the long run, the difference will come from the skill you show when you are neither Lucky nor unlucky...
Here's some old threads with tips on tavern, but since you're still completely new, better ignore these tips for a while since it might just confuse you.

The most important thing for a newbie is to keep playing until you get used to all the cards.

Some basic tips:
-When the game just starts, focus on building your resources generating cards (Monastery, mine, and barracks)

-The two extreme cards that you need to watch out for, dragon (+20 tower) and shift (switches your and opponent's walls)

-Other cards to watch out if you're already getting more used to the game:
Pegasus rider, fission and dissension, big tower cards
@guyb agree with all your points, except regarding the non-EC game modes

It's true that east river involves skill, but the other ones are mainly due to luck
(Actually, thanks for pointing out that bits about player's winrate on ER, wasnt aware of that one)

Since the game goes long, the game is just mainly about who gets more resources first and tower cards later on
(or more resources later on if you decide to go to the 'win by resource' route)

Planning ahead your future turns doesn't do much since it's just mainly about who draws the right card in the long term.
(Although there are different kind of tactics about which cards you want to keep in your hand, which is irrelevant in EC)

In EC, those who can properly plan their turns can figure out how will they win later on, and able to anticipate what will the opponent be doing

This allows the skilled player to win 1-2 turns faster, or slows the opponent's win by 1-2 turns, which means a lot on your overall winrate.
Or maybe there are tactics in the longer game modes that I'm unaware of :p

But since they took such a long time I normally got bored and prefers to play on EC instead :p
So I rarely plays on the longer ones
for sareth:
There are a lot of tactics in longer games, but they are farm more complicated so better avoid them.
for randomr1:
Mind explaining what some of these are?

The 'harder' decisions that I know could be relevant in longer games are mainly:
-whether you decide want to go to the resources or tower route
-what cards you want to 'kidnap' in hand or you want to keep playing so they're always in circulation
(e.g. you want blue cards, so keep playing blue cards to increase the chance in drawing them later in the game. Or, 'kidnap' green cards since you dont want your opponents getting stacks to damage you)

Still, I personally feel it's still very draw-dependant which makes it more luck based than EC or ER
the 1 1 5 area has a lot of tactics.mine wars, controlled wall damage, card kidnaping and a few more but as in every area, luck plays a big factor. From my experience ec is the most luck based since you can lose from a bot and I doubt that the bot can win at other areas so frequently.
Is it really profitable to use gold cards when gambling for money?

Considering it takes 50 gold per game.
