Let's analyze the upgrade.
HP +11
Attack +2
Range +20 (what for?)
Careful aim ability
+3 shots

And minuses:
-1 defense
-5 mana

Is this the only case where in upgrade something is reduced?
They are way tankier than the Magis, I dont think their upgrade is actually "Negative".
The upgrade is a little bit positive. Not much, but a little.

+ Battlemagis have to have a bad unit, ALL of their upgraded units are better than the Wizard unit upgrades (Wreckers, Genies, Spynxes...).

Not really. There are cases where upgrade loses speed while some lose defense. I think when you upgrade bowmen to xbows/wardens you lose initiative :p

Loss of abilities upon upgrading isn't rare at all. Alt lizard upgrade loses lizard charge which is big.

Yeah, (both) sphynx loose ini when upgraded, too.

I quite like most of old wiz upgrades; even grem wreckers aren't really better than engineers; it's just that battlewise has offense tree with battlefury and archery for a total extra 80% damage compared to engineers, plus twice the recruit count.

Maybe because in 2x2 ambushes magis in a corner can't shoot in range a stack at the opposite corner?? :p
