Thief hunting - evil or not

AuthorThief hunting - evil or not
Hope I'm posting in the right section of forum; else transfer it to the right section plz.

Today I'm asking a question to myself "Is it right to hunt thieves?" because I've been doing this for a long time now. You may think if I'm doing this for a long time, then why ask now. It is because today a fellow member of LWM asked me politely to stop messing with his ambushes and I got such a message for the 1st time (in between he is a very cool guy, I like him). His politeness as well as one of my friend's encouragement (he is a thief too) are the things that forced me to ask this question. Am I doing something wrong to him, to my thief friends or to other thieves?

Initially I started thief hunting due to vengeance, because I often used to get caught in ambushes as I travelled a lot for hunt help. Gradually, it developed into a habit. But I never target any thief (if there's a way to target a particular thief at all, which I'm not aware of).

Many a time I get caught in friend's ambushes as well. I get caught into the ambushes of 2 thieves most often, viz. "MisterTwister" and "Ryla." I don't know why, but I'm sorry for that. I just travel randomly. It's not like they complained ever. Still, I thought to mention their name here. Hope I'm not offending them here.

Before u post your comments, plz note certain things here:
1) I know there is nothing legally wrong in thief hunting.
2) I know I can get much more from CG with same AP I'm hunting thieves with. But it's my choice. So, plz refrain from suggesting about the merit of gaining exp or fsp.

Looking for suggestion from the LWM community!
Thanks!
i hunted thiefs on lvl 14 too i enjoyed from it more than anythink on this game before:) keep it up and make em suffer

"Is it right to hunt thieves?"
Before your conscience kill
There was a debate about this issue just few days ago.

Yes, legally there is nothing wrong about hunting thieves - except the fact that it's costy. However since you are not yet a member of thieves' guild, why don't you save up to get a TGI?
I would never do it myself.
Since you don't like it if you catch a thief hunter, why do it to someone else?
Though I can understand level 15's are so bored of ambushing only and want something for a change.
(I always travel with 1 unit)
Before your conscience kill you, please look carefully at the members of the above clan, and note a certain "official"... and wonder yourself: Would Coucilor Kalirosh https://www.lordswm.com/pl_info.php?id=4508656 be part of something wrong ?
LOL

That's Thieves calling thief hunting evil? That's hilarious. For a second, when I read your heading, I thought you were asking if "thieving" is evil.

For a long time I didn't do ambushes, because the idea of robbing other players just didn't sit well with me. I finally relented and started it, I think at level 10, because it's good to have that option to play. I did just enough to get the second TGI, and basically have stopped since then.

I am quite aware that I'm in the tiny minority. The vast majority of players have no qualm about ambushing other players.

Still if you want to hunt thieves, I'd say, go for it. You're fighting evil.
In my point of view, there is nothing wrong in thief hunt, I sometimes thief hunt, not specific players, but sometimes I just get so mad that Im travelling with min. troops (1shrew etc) to do hunts and then the thief doesnt even return my gold.

But I feel so sorry when I get ambushed by players Im friend with.

Anyway I don't thief hunt so often mainly because I think we don't do to others what we don't want to ourselfs, sometimes it's just boring you set ambush and all the time its a player in full arts and you know you already lost that fight before even press ready. But as you don't own an TGI yet i think its pointless I get into this point of view :)

But you could also save up for TGI.

good luck
because the idea of robbing other players just didn't sit well with me.

I dont know about that, but hunting thieves = let other players lose and waste their time for 1 extra hour doesn't seem too different to me

it's just a game, don't call anything evil or honor.
hunting thieves = let other players lose and waste their time for 1 extra hour

You make the most ridiculous argument. You wouldn't be wasting your time if you don't ambush in the first place.
for Geryon:

I am just using your logic. Thieving travelers and hunting thieves just seems the same to me (the loss to thieves might be even more significant). Also by the logic you just said, you wouldn't be ambushed if you don't travel.

I am not trying to say hunting thieves is evil and I also don't like when people say thieves are evil. It's the game, it's the rule. Follow it, get used to it or don't play.
Also, (slightly off-topic) as a thief, I don't like fighting travelers (no matter they are in full or not) as much as they don't like me. PVP fights in TG is just a joke: it's not balanced, it's much slower than a caravan fight and less exp/fsp income. And in case you lose, the difficulty of caravan will not reduce so it's kinda like you wasted 1 ambush.

The reason why I say this is: don't sound like the thieves set ambush to "rob" your money. Few of them expect (and wanted) to catch a traveler at all.
If anything thieves are the ones who got ripped off.
1. Pay 1 million gold for the privilege to "rob" others.
2. Super long ambush waits.
3. When you finally get an ambush, there's a possibility of encountering thief hunters or overpowered caravans.
4. Even if you do manage to win you only get to "rob" 40-80 gold from your victim.

Personally I think ambushing and thief hunting are fine since they are game mechanics. What is immoral and should be illegal are all those staged combats where one stalks and specifically targets individuals when ambushing or thief hunting. Yes, it is possible to target individuals for both thieves and thief hunters. Some might argue that's within the game rules, but I argue it isn't because you can be ambushed every single time you travel (unless you lost within the last 3 hrs). So you can be ambushed multiple times everyday by the same person or group of people targeting you. Also you can also be thief hunted for every single one of your ambushes by that same person or group of people.

It is morally and legally okay, if people randomly ambush or hunts you, but it certainly isn't okay for you to be harassed every time you ambush or travel.
Thieving travelers and hunting thieves just seems the same to me

Uh, no. That's like saying committing robberies and catching robbers are the same, and that it's evil to force criminals to waste 10 years of their time in jail.

But let's talk about the original question. The poster said his friend asked him not to mess up his ambushes. How is he supposed to do that exactly? Not travel at all, or just travel lightly so that when they rob him, he'd be easy meat? The only way ambushes get triggered is when other players travel. So if you set up ambushes, you're bound to get players sometimes.

He said the guy asked him politely. That's just too funny. It's like a robber politely asking the convenient store's owner not to keep any gun, so that in case he's in the neighborhood, the store owner won't "mess up" his robbery. You know where to shove such "polite" requests.
I have to agree with #12
Better to remove PvP fights from thieving, then game mechanics can be changed for instant trigger :)

+1 for instant trigger, big lol

and for Geryon:

Such a trivial loss (~60 gold with the gaining of some exp and fsp) could be exaggerated as such, you are good. I found myself wasting time discussing this with you since I take this game as a game and you takes this as your real life
There is one important point which not everybody know and remember:
To get a caravan U need a traveller of your level or 1 above/lower level than U and thanks to thief hunters getting caravans on high level isn't that hard as it could be.
2. Super long ambush waits.

Seems we play on different serwer. 7 ambushes i 2h (recovering took most of that time)

for latawica:

Don't forget .com is an international server. Yes, at day time TG triggering is easy, but for those who mainly plays at 0:00-12:00 server time, the TG triggers much slower
for latawica:
Try server times 22:00-7:00 :p

Anyway like kolo said; thanks to all the thief hunters, getting caravans have gotten easier, but the thief hunters aren't consistently traveling at all hours and on everyday. Also at the beginning of the year the admins adjusted the thief mechanics to approximately double the triggers.

Strangely you used a 2h time period. Cause that's exactly how long an ambush can take to trigger for me. I've spent way more than 2hrs to get a caravan, but since the time wasn't sequential cause I stopped to do hunts and other things, so I don't count that.
