In my opinion it is always to upgrade creatures in your main faction.
Spawns are very usefull and much better then imps |

for your question, i would suggest you to upgrade spawn at lvl 5 if you have sufficient gold.
spawn has better stat compared to imps and its special ability steal enemy hero mana if they have and give it to you |
