There is no cost for changing factions directly. Only the costs of constructing the new castle for the new faction.

Demons get +1 attack. Wizards and Dark Elves both get +1 knowledge.
Finally, each faction level provides you with additional bonuses to your troops. www.lordswm.com/help.php?section=10 - If you changed from a faction where you had faction level 3 for example, to one where you had 0 faction level, then you would miss out on 1 attack, 1 defense and 1 initiative for the new faction.
