Lets star with Older Foes story K'Herest is DE and feels tingly in presence of someone and DE feel weird in presence of the mightiest faction(WIZ).
Most spoilers have Wizards'.
They are one of the oldest faction.
DE were the least popular and had the first alt, then Knights because admins did need to work much on it, now Wizard as they are one of the least popular and most creatures can be taken as it is from HOMM.

Why did knight even get an alt faction?
They are 3-rd most populous faction, much more popular than barb, wiz, necro (among the other old factions without algrade).
Moreover, the standard knight can choose a holy build, with cheap holy talents already. It's not so much difference from the holy altgrade. |

Admins did not need to work hard on that one, so they introduced it early.
For Admins:
I dont mean that you did not work hard, it must have been difficult, but must have been easier than barb or others |
